Washington, D.C. — For over six decades, the Cuban people have suffered under totalitarian tyranny and have faced every type of oppressive action, leading to thousands upon thousands fleeing their homeland due to the lack of basic liberties.
Among the many brave Cubans who have long fought for freedom and democracy, are Dr. Oscar Elias Biscet and Rosa Maria Payá, who continue to be strong voices for the oppressed. CHLI honored Dr. Biscet in 2017 and Ms. Payá in 2020 with the CHLI Leadership in International Relations Award, and we pledged then, as we reiterate now, to support the struggle for a free and democratic Cuba.
July 11th, 2021, marks a date in history when the Cuban people said: No More. Thousands all over the island confronted the repressive totalitarian state, risking their own and their families’ lives, by demonstrating in the streets demanding freedom and human rights.
The Cuban people need to know that we in the United States stand in solidarity with them. CHLI urges all civil society, in the United States and throughout the world, to also stand with the Cuban people at this critical time.
As we support our Cuban neighbors 90 miles away from the United States, let us remember the words of Martin Luther King, Jr, “An injustice anywhere is an affront to justice everywhere.”

El Instituto de Liderazgo Hispano del Congreso (CHLI) apoya el derecho del pueblo cubano a la libertad y los derechos humanos fundamentales.
Durante más de seis décadas, el pueblo cubano ha sufrido bajo una tiranía totalitaria y ha enfrentado todo tipo de opresión, lo que ha llevado a miles y miles a huir de su tierra natal por la falta de libertades básicas.
Entre los muchos valientes cubanos que durante mas de seis decadas han luchado por la libertad y la democracia, se encuentran el Dr. Oscar Elias Biscet y Rosa Maria Payá, quienes continúan siendo fuertes voces en favor de los oprimidos. CHLI honró al Dr. Biscet en 2017 y a Rosa Maria Payá en 2020 con el Premio CHLI al Liderazgo en Relaciones Internacionales, y nos comprometimos entonces, como reiteramos ahora, a apoyar la lucha por una Cuba libre y democrática.
El 11 de julio de 2021 marca una fecha histórica, cuando el pueblo cubano dijo: No más. Miles de personas en toda la isla se enfrentaron al represivo Estado totalitario, arriesgando sus propias vidas y las de sus familias, manifestándose en las calles exigiendo libertad y derechos humanos.
El pueblo cubano necesita saber que nosotros en Estados Unidos estamos con él. CHLI insta a toda la sociedad civil, en Estados Unidos y en todo el mundo, a apoyar también al pueblo cubano en este momento crítico.
Mientras apoyamos a nuestros vecinos cubanos a 90 millas de Estados Unidos, recordemos las palabras de Martin Luther King, Jr, “Una injusticia en cualquier parte, constituye una afrenta a la justicia en todas partes.”
