Recap of CHLI Congressional Public Policy Briefing on Health Care

The Congressional Hispanic Leadership Institute (CHLI) held a Congressional Public Policy Briefing on Health Care in Washington D.C. on November 14th, 2024.

This year’s briefing brought together a diverse group of experts in the health care field to have in-depth dialogues on current public policy issues that affect the U.S. Hispanic and Portuguese communities.

Our esteemed panel of speakers included our moderator, Jeanette Contreras, Founder of Latina Health Collab LLC, and panelists Guadalupe Pacheco, Director of Programs at National Hispanic Health Foundation; Jonathan Martinez, Head of US Federal Affairs at Haleon; and Dr. Donna Carstens, Senior Medical Director, Respiratory Fasenra at AstraZeneca.

Panelist’s held a dynamic discussion on advancing healthcare for Hispanic communities, addressing key challenges and solutions. The discussion highlighted strategies to reduce health disparities, such as increasing diversity in the health care workforce and promoting equitable access to care. They emphasized the importance of community engagement and cross-sector collaboration in shaping health policies and programs that empower Latinos.

Panelists explored trends impacting healthy living, including barriers to health care access and unmet needs in respiratory health, while emphasizing the disproportionate effects this has on Hispanic communities. Innovative efforts to address these challenges were discussed to target health initiatives, such as advocating for policy solutions at the federal level to strengthen public health systems.
