On Wednesday, December 17, 2025, the Congressional Hispanic Leadership Institute (CHLI) announced Andrew Renteria and Eduardo Lerma as the 2025 Vermillion Award recipients during a reception hosted by CHLI Board Member, Andrew Vlastsy at BP. The Vermillion Award is presented to two congressional staff members who support the advancement of the Hispanic community in the United States, have demonstrated support for CHLI’s programs and activities, and share CHLI’s dedication to bipartisan leadership.
The award is named for Stephen D. Vermillion, a Capitol Hill staff member who assisted in establishing CHLI in 2003. Vermillion believed deeply in investing in leadership and entrepreneurship within the Hispanic community. The Vermillion Award continues his legacy and passion for preparing future Hispanic leaders.
The 2025 Vermillion Award Recipients are:

Andrew Renteria, Chief of Staff to CHLI Board Member Rep. David Valadao (CA).
A Central Valley native, Andrew Renteria began his public service career in Rep. Valadao’s office in 2013 and rose through legislative leadership roles before becoming Chief of Staff in 2021. In this role, he has helped advance a pragmatic, Valley-focused agenda, including support for agricultural communities and securing federal funding for critical infrastructure.

Eduardo Lerma, Chief of Staff to Rep. Verónica Escobar (TX)
Born and raised along the U.S.–Mexico border in El Paso, Texas, Eduardo Lerma has served as Chief of Staff to Congresswoman Verónica Escobar (TX) since 2019, bringing nearly two decades of congressional experience. He is widely respected for his legislative expertise, leadership, and commitment to mentoring Hispanic congressional staff through his role as Chair of the Congressional Hispanic Staff Association’s Advisory Committee.
“Andrew and Eduardo are exceptional leaders whose work reflects CHLI’s mission to advance the Hispanic community. They embody Stephen D. Vermillion’s value of bipartisan collaboration, service, and a commitment to building pathways for future generations,” said CHLI Chairwoman, The Honorable Ileana Ros-Lehtinen.
